Under 13 Junior State Squad Selection Day 2021

This year, we will introduce the new Badminton Victoria Junior State Squad program for the Under 13, Under 15, Under 17 and Under 19 age groups. BV has recognised the need to bring the best players in Victoria in each age group together on a regular/weekly basis through the year to encourage high-level training and sparring which will highly benefit the development of our top junior players.

This new program will align with the new Badminton Australia High Performance system and pathway to ensure we provide the right support and opportunity to those junior players that are aiming to represent Victoria and Australia at the highest national and international level.

Under 15, Under 17 and Under 19 squads will be selected based on previous performances with invitations being sent this week.

The squad will bring together BV’s elite senior players 2 to 3 times per week in the early mornings with the aim to create a high-level training environment and a culture of excellence as Victoria seeks to build on its on-court performances and successes from the past.

Jeff Tho is a former Commonwealth Games representative (2010, 2014) and won the Gold Medal in Men’s Singles at the 2014 Oceania Championships. Jeff was recently appointed as the Badminton Australia National Senior Coach and will compliment that part time role with his new role as the BV Senior Head Coach. TJ Weistra, BV Executive General Manager, said “we are delighted with Jeff’s appointment and the experience that Jeff will bring to the role. Based on his previous playing career, coaching experience and new role with Badminton Australia, he already has a strong established relationship with many of the players that will form part of the new squad and I can’t wait to see the results of the new program and Jeff’s leadership.”

Jeff said “I’m very happy to be involved in the first Senior State Squad that will allow Victoria’s best players to train together in an environment that is conducive of development and professionalism. I’m excited about what we can achieve and the systems that we can set up for high performance at Badminton Victoria.”

A new look for a new era…

Today, Badminton Victoria celebrated a new look for a new era with Badminton Australia and our fellow state and territory associations!

We are excited to launch our new logo in collaboration with the new National Badminton Brand. Badminton Australia hosted the star-studded Launch event with an amazing line-up of guests today. You can watch it here:

The launch comes after over 7 months of planning, research, consultation and development with the One Message One Brand Working group, comprising of representatives from Badminton Australia, consultants, designers, and state and territory badminton organisations, including Badminton Victoria staff member, Olivia Na. We thank every person in our Victorian community who supported the journey, including every person who completed a survey, provided feedback in consultations, meetings and presentations, and shared the news and updates online and through word of mouth.

With a new logo and vision for a national brand for the sport, Badminton Victoria is excited to continue supporting the local badminton community and our member clubs, associations and venues.

Extended Nominations: Para Badminton Ambassador Programme with Badminton Victoria

Badminton Victoria is pleased to introduce our new Para Badminton Ambassador Programme. The initiative aims to engage people with disability and providers of sport, recreation and community services with volunteers and passionate Para badminton players.

Aligned with Badminton Victoria’s Inclusive Vision for Badminton, Para Badminton Ambassadors help connect badminton with communities, share their personal experiences and promote Para badminton pathways and activities as a vehicle for engagement and inclusion.

The programme provides Ambassadors with an official platform to become involved in the introduction of badminton related initiatives in the community, as well as opportunities for professional development.

We hope the initiative will continue to encourage all people – regardless of gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, race, nationality, ethnic background, or disability – to engage with our diverse badminton community. We are looking forward to working with our member clubs, associations, venues, and stakeholders to deliver welcoming and accessible facilities and programmes for new, returning and existing badminton participants.

Nominations for the Badminton Victoria Para Badminton Ambassador Programme is open online here and closes Monday 7th December.

Tjitte (TJ) Weistra appointed Executive General Manager for Badminton Victoria

Badminton Victoria is excited to announce the appointment of Tjitte (TJ) Weistra as the Executive General Manager for Badminton Victoria after a thorough recruitment process. TJ will commence in the role from Monday 30 November 2020.

TJ comes with extensive experience in leadership, strategy, development, events and stakeholder relations. TJ has a rich history in badminton, representing The Netherlands in the 90s and early 2000’s before moving on to a National Coaching role with the Peruvian Badminton Federation. TJ made his mark in New Zealand, where he was an integral part of the Waikato Badminton Association first as Director of Coaching and later as CEO guiding the organisation through a major governance and operational restructure. TJ was also the Badminton NZ National Coach and High Performance Manager for several years which included leading NZ teams to the 2006 Commonwealth Games, the 2008 Olympics, Thomas & Uber Cups finals and various World Junior Championships. TJ and his family relocated to the Mornington Peninsula early in 2019.

TJ will take over from Acting State Director Gillian Patmore. Gillian will continue at Badminton Victoria until the end of 2020 to assist TJ to settle into the role.

TJ shared his excitement about leading Badminton Victoria:

I am looking forward to servicing the Victorian badminton community and bringing my passion for badminton and my previous experience to this exciting role. Badminton Victoria is entering a new era building on previous hard work and successes both on and off the court and it is a privilege to be given the opportunity to be part of this new chapter.”

We look forward to TJ joining our badminton community to be part of our journey in to 2021 and beyond.

We thank Gillian Patmore for taking on the role of Acting State Director at short notice and for doing such a wonderful job in the role. She may be stepping down from this role, but she will continue to be an integral part of our badminton community.

Kind regards,

An Inclusive Vision for Badminton Victoria

Badminton Victoria (BV) is proud to launch our new Inclusion Policy and Strategy for People with Disability. We recognise the diverse range of communities who enjoy badminton throughout the state and aim to proactively welcome all people to our sporting community through these evolving governing and planning initiatives.

Inclusion Policy

The new Inclusion Policy encourages greater representation in badminton across our community. It aims to increase participation, especially amongst groups that face additional barriers to play, with a focus on marginalised communities such as but not limited to:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

  • People with disability

  • Culturally and linguistically diverse people

  • LGBTQIA+ people

Strategy for People with Disability (PWD Strategy)

The PWD Strategy was developed in consultation with research conducted with Badminton Australia and Badminton Oceania to build a strong grassroots base for people of all abilities to enjoy badminton and support a pathway for para badminton at all skill levels. The PWD Strategy adopts a “fit for purpose” approach, addressing three major factors affecting the player experience:

  • Clubs and Associations

  • Education and Training

  • Competitive Play

Badminton Victoria will continue to encourage fair and equal opportunities in every aspect of badminton – regardless of gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, race, nationality, ethnic background, or disability – who aspire to be a player, coach, administrator, technical official, volunteer or manager. We are looking forward to working with our member clubs, associations, venues, and stakeholders to deliver welcoming and accessible facilities and programmes for all our badminton participants.

The Inclusion Policy and PWD Strategy are now available on the Badminton Victoria website here.
