More Victorians selected for the 2022 Badminton Australia Falcons Programs – Seniors and Para

Since the first intake of Badminton Australia Falcons in January 2022, more Victorians have been selected for the national senior and para programs!

2022 FALCONS SENIOR PROGRAM

In April 2022, Badminton Australia announced additional players who were automatically selected to the Falcons program based on their finishing places at the 2022 Yonex Australian National Championships. The players selected for the 2022 Falcons program during this second intake included Victorians:

  • Joyce Choong (2G Sports)
  • Jacob Schueler (Ocean Grove Badminton Club)

In the final intake of the 2022 Falcons Senior Program, one more Victorian solidified his spot in after performances at the 2022 VICTOR Oceania Championships in late April to early May:

  • Nathan Tang (Glen Waverley Badminton Club)

The inclusion of the additional athletes was significant to the consideration of these athletes in teams for the 2022 TotalEnergies Badminton World Federation Uber Cup Finals and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

2022 FALCONS PARA PROGRAM

Also announced in April 2022 was the first group of Para athletes selected for the inaugural Para Falcons Program in 2022, which included Victorians:

  • Céline Vinot (Melbourne Smashers Badminton Club)
  • Bree Mellberg (Ability Para Badminton Club (Western Suburbs Badminton Association))
  • Luke Missen (Sale and Maffra Badminton Association)

The inaugural program follows Céline and Luke having been recognised as Para Falcons in 2021. A highlight of progress for our para athletes includes an outstanding performance by Céline who recently winning bronze in the SL 3 Women’s Singles at the 4th Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International 2022.

While only picking up para badminton in 2022, newcomer Bree is no stranger to competitive sport, having competed in Wheelchair Basketball at the Paralympic Games and was an elite junior diver.

The second group of athletes will be considered for selection to the 2022 Falcons Para program after the 2022 Oceania Para Championships to be held during 28-30 July, Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Congratulations to these players selected to the Para Falcons for 2022!
