Rio 2016 Olympian Sawan Serasinghe (Glen Waverley Badminton Club) joined our Junior State Team and Development Camp players for an up-close and personal conversation (virtually) last weekend.
Sawan shared his personal memories and experiences from competing at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, accompanied by photos and videos from Rio and his travels along the way. He also answered questions about the uniforms and gear that Olympians receive, living at the Olympic Village, playing against one of his idols, Lee Yong-dae and of course his photo of his post-match McDonald’s meal that went viral online around the world.
Aside from the fun and unique experiences at the Olympic Games, Sawan highlighted the importance of being mentally fit, aware of yourself, having a good support network in and outside of the badminton life and tips on how as a young player you can plan out short- and long- term goals.
Also in attendance was Sawan’s fellow training comrade and State Team player Nathan Tang (Glen Waverley Badminton Club). Nathan shared advice from the perspective of competing in the Singles discipline. Nathan himself has also spent time competing on the international circuit in previous years.
Thank you to Sawan and Nathan for these special insights, and President Rochelle Liyanage, and the Junior Committee for organising this awesome opportunity for our rising stars.
