VICs hit the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games!

The Australian Falcons have landed in Tokyo and guess which Victorians are there?

Gronya Somerville

After launching the Australian Olympic Team uniform in May, Gronya Somerville (Play Badminton) will finally make her Olympic debut in the Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles disciplines this month. More about her #RaceToTokyo can be read on the Badminton Oceania website here.

Stuart Brehaut

Supporting and coaching the Australian Badminton Team is fellow Victorian and 2004 Olympian Stuart Brehaut! Growing up in regional Victoria and playing with the local Ballarat Badminton Association, Stuart has played a key role in the sport since his transition from athlete to coach. Stuart is currently the National Senior Head Coach with Badminton Australia and will be an experienced mentor for the Aussie athletes at the Games.

Hei Meng “Richard” Wong

Richard Wong is one of our standout technical officials in Victoria and he is set to Line Judge at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. He currently serves as President of the Badminton Victoria Court Officials Committee and is a member of Central Badminton Association.

Ravi Nandan

Ravi Nandan is an up and rising superstar technical official in Victoria. He is set to Line Judge at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. He currently volunteers with the Badminton Victoria Court Officials Committee and a member of Badminton Connect.

2021 State Para Badminton Development Squad

We are excited to have launched our first Badminton Victoria Para Badminton Development Squad recently! Our first session at Altona Badminton Centre – WSBA Inc. went swimmingly, with newly appointed coach Vee-Vian Chong (Westside Badminton) leading the squad in 2021.

Congratulations to our eight (8) athletes on being part of the first Victorian state squad for para badminton in Australia:

Badminton Victoria Performance Committee

Selection of players for Badminton Victoria (BV) State Squads and Teams will now be the responsibility of the new Badminton Victoria Performance Committee (BVPC). This committee is made up of the Junior and Senior State Squad coaches, Para Badminton Development Squad coach, and two other highly-qualified personnel:

  • Vee-Vian Chong – BV Performance Coach (Senior State Squad, Para Badminton Development Squad)
  • Ross Smith – BV Junior U17/19 State Squad Coach
  • Matthew Chau – BV Junior U13/15 State Squad Coach
  • Gillian Patmore – Former BV Junior Committee member and Junior Selector
  • Mei Wan – Former BV Junior Committee member
  • Tjitte “TJ” Weistra – BV Executive General Manager (Chair)

The establishment of the BVPC will also mean the discontinuation of the BV Junior Committee, and the Junior and Senior Selectors groups. We thank all of the volunteers who have been part of these groups and playing key roles in assembling our high-performing State Teams over the years.

We look forward to working with the BVPC to continue developing our high-performing athletes of the future and work within the Badminton Australia High-Performance Pathways.

The players will train together weekly in 2021 under the guidance of appointed coaches Matthew Chau and Ross Smith.

Matthew is a former Australian representative player, Olympian, 4 x Oceania Champion and holds various international titles. He will assist the development of the Under 13 and Under 15 players in the Junior Squad.

Ross is a former Australian representative player, 2 x Olympian, 4 x Commonwealth Games representative, 4 x Oceania Champion and holds more than 12 International titles. He will work with the Under 17 and Under 19 players in the Junior Squad.

Congratulations to all the players selected and we look forward to supporting our high-performing athletes of the future. Get Active Victoria Kids Voucher Program

The Get Active Kids Voucher Program helps eligible families get their kids involved in organised sport and recreation activities by reimbursing the cost of membership and registration fees, uniforms and equipment. Eligible children may be able to receive up to $200 each.

Become a Host Partner for the Badminton Victoria Month of Women and Girls

Badminton Victoria is seeking applications from our Member clubs, associations and venues to become a Host Partner for the Month of Women and Girls in March 2021.

The 3-Week program can be adapted to environments with or without badminton courts, indoor and outdoor settings, a range of skill and ability levels, and even online.
