Coaching is a fun and rewarding way to get involved with badminton, develop yourself and contribute to your community.

As an qualified coach, you can build professional careers, coach in the local community or teach the sport at schools. Whatever your coaching goals are, Badminton Victoria is invested in education for teaching and coaching practices that are informed, safe and engaging for our growing sport.

Coaching in Australia requires you to attain an approved qualification and be registered with Badminton Australia.

Funded Positions: 
Funded positions in coach qualification courses may be available! Please check the course enrolment information for all opportunities and eligibility information.

As part of your coach qualification, you must complete the requisite online courses by Sport Australia, Sport Integrity Australia and Play By The Rules. The resources aims to inform you of the laws and regulation protecting sport and its participants in Australia.

Shuttle Time is a program that teaches motor skills, physical coordination and fundamental basics. The program is designed to teach to children aged up to 15 years old. The Shuttle Time Coaching Course is perfect for teachers and aspiring junior coaches with no badminton playing experience required.

Course duration:
4 hours practical training + online modules (BWF Teacher / Blended Course Model)

Course Fee:
$100 per person
(or $175 per person for non-members)

Accreditation Fee to register your qualification with Badminton Australia
Adult: $45, Concession: $35, Under 18's: $25

Curriculum by Badminton World Federation, Badminton Oceania and Badminton Australia.

Badminton Australia (BA) Foundation Coaching is an introduction to the fundamental basics of badminton for all ages. The Foundation Coaching Course is perfect for those who volunteer at their club or who are looking to begin coaching as a job. Some badminton-playing experience is recommended for completing the course.

Course duration:
8 hours practical training + online modules

Coaching Course Fee:
$100 per person
(or $175 per person for non-members)

Accreditation Fee to register your qualification with Badminton Australia
Adult: $85, Concession: $75, Under 18's: $65

Curriculum by Badminton Australia.

Badminton World Federation Coach Eduation Level 1 (BWF Level 1 Coaching) Courses teach tactical, physical and technical aspects of coaching for competitive play. Upon completion of the course, candidates will become an internationally recognised accredited BWF Level 1 Coach. Qualification permits the coach to coach at state level and in club, community, school and private sectors, and mentor all ages. Playing and coaching experience is recommended to enrol in the course.

Course duration:
2 x weekends of practical training + online modules

Course Fee:
$250 per person
(or $300 per person for non-members)

Curriculum by Badminton World Federation and Badminton Australia.

Badminton World Federation (BWF) has developed the new Level 1 Disability module to complement any coach qualification. The module helps address some specific areas of focus when coaching players with disabilities.  As with any of our resources, the idea is to provide a starting point, which the coach can adapt or adjust depending on the players’ needs.

The principles in the Shuttle Time and Coach Education resources by BWF are applicable to ALL players, including those with physical or intellectual disabilities. In essence, disability coaching is good badminton coaching.

Badminton World Federation Coach Eduation Level 2 (BWF Level 2 Coaching) Courses advances the knowledge built in the BWF Level 1 to a high technical, tactical and physical standard. Upon completion of the course, candidates will become an internationally recognised accredited BWF Level 2 Coach. Qualification permits the coach to coach up to state and national levels in Australia. Playing and coaching experience, and a previous coach qualification is recommended to enrol in the course.

Coaching with Badminton Victoria

As a qualified badminton coach, you can work or volunteer with schools, clubs and community groups. Badminton Victoria also works with our state-wide network of qualified coaches to support our development and performance initiatives:

Sporting Schools is an Australian Government initiative designed to help schools to increase children's participation in sport, and to connect them with community sporting opportunities.

Opportunities with Sporting Schools include:

  • Belong to Australia’s largest ever sport participation program
  • Build relationships, establish new networks and gain community recognition
  • Gain access to a range of training and development opportunities

Badminton Victoria appoint coaches for our state performance program. State squad coaches facilitate weekly training sessions. State Team Coaches travel with the players for national championships.​

We have state teams and squads for:

  • Senior (Open-level) athletes
  • Under 19 athletes
  • Under 17 athletes
  • Under 15 athletes
  • Under 13 athletes

In collaboration with​ community partners, Badminton Victoria facilitates badminton programs for a diverse range of communities. Our network of coaches are appointed to volunteer or work in many of our initiatives, which include:
